For Haitian immigrants across the US this week, the lives they’ve made in America are hanging in the balance. The Trump administration is expected to announce by Wednesday whether it will extend their temporary protective status. That designation — TPS for short — gives work permits to immigrants from countries ravaged by disasters and war, and protects them from deportation. It’s usually extended for 18 months at a time.

But last week, the Department of Homeland Security ended TPS for Nicaragua, giving immigrants 6 months to leave. And the administration has repeatedly signaled it won’t extend TPS for other countries that currently have it. VICE News followed one family on the eve of a decision that would determine their legal status in the US.
